Content of data protection
The privacy policy deals with personal data. According to § 2 Abs. 1 of the Data Protection Act issued by the city of Berlin they are individual information about personal or material circumstances of a particular or identifiable neutral person. These include e.g. information such as the name, home address, email address and/or phone number, but also usage data such as your IP address. Of course, the Technical University Berlin observes the statutory provisions of the data protection laws (Data Protection Act Berlin, Federal Data Protection Act), the Telemedia Act (TMG) and other legal provisions and specifications. We do everything to ensure that you can trust us regarding your personal information. Thus, the transmission of sensitive data is encrypted. In addition, our websites are protected by technical measures against damage or unauthorized access.
General Privacy Policy
(1) When you access TUB web pages or download data from these pages, information about them is stored in a log file containing: your IP address, the date and time of the page visit, the page accessed or the name of the retrieved file, the amount of data transferred, the user agent string of your web browser, the web page from which you accessed the current page or file, and the status message as to whether the access was successful. The non-anonymized log data will be automatically deleted after two weeks and not archived. (2) This data will be used only for non-commercial purposes: they will only be viewed manually if necessary and used for error analysis, optimization or investigation of abuse cases or performance bottlenecks ). We also use cookies for data collection and storage. Cookies are small data packets that consist of text and are stored by your web browser when you visit a website. They do not harm your device – cookies do not contain viruses or give us the opportunity to spy on you. We use two types of cookies: temporary and permanent. Temporary cookies are automatically deleted when you close your web browser (session cookies). On the other hand, permanent cookies have a maximum lifespan – with up to one day. Cookies are used by us to enable visitors and editors to make optimum use of the websites. The cookies are never used to track user actions or for behavioral analysis. They are used exclusively where they are technically necessary or more meaningful than other techniques, e.g. in the registration of the login status of users and editors or the storage of information such as “show mobile version of the website”. The use of the web pages is mostly possible without the use of cookies. However, for functions or pages that require a login, the use of cookies is required. You can set your web browser so that already stored cookies are deleted. (4) Within the TUB website occasionally external pages or services are included. For example, the integrated search function leads to a page of Google. Here, only the search terms entered previously in the search field are transmitted. Techniques such as “iframes” include external website content in certain places. The providers of these websites may be able to collect, store and, if necessary, process and transmit information from you. However, this does not include any personal information or data, unless you have voluntarily submitted them via a web form. Otherwise, only such information may only be collected by the external service providers during a normal page visit, e.g. the IP address, the approximate location, the browser used, the page you are coming from, etc.
Scope of data collection and storage
For the use of our web pages the communication of your personal data is basically not necessary. In order for the TU Berlin to be able to fulfill its service contract, we may require special personal data. This applies in particular to answering individual e-mail inquiries, ordering special services or applications. If you entrust us with the provision of a service, we only collect and store your personal data as far as it is necessary to provide the service.
Collection and storage of usage data
To optimize our website, we collect and store data, such as accessed pages, the date and time of the page visit, the page from which you accessed our page, etc. An automated processing is done for the purpose of generating weekly access statistics that are made available to TUB facilities upon request for analysis. For this, the log data is anonymized by hiding the last two digits of the IPs and removing GET parameters from the URLs. In this way, the statistics are based on anonymous data, so that a conclusion on natural people and linking them with associated user data is not possible. The non-anonymized log data will be automatically deleted after two weeks and not archived; permanent storage is excluded The anonymized log files and access statistics are archived on a long-term basis. On some websites, using the web analysis service software Matomo (formerly known as Piwik, see www.matomo.org) based on the legitimate interest of the TUBan statistical analysis of user behavior for optimization and marketing purposes pursuant to Art. 6 para. 1 lit. f DSGVO data collected and stored.
The affected web pages are explicitly indicated at the end of the right-hand column. We use our own Matomo instance on servers of the TU Berlin, which was set up according to the recommendations of the “Independent Center for Data Protection” (ULD) Schleswig Holstein. When accessing the pages, your access data will be anonymized immediately. A unique web analytics cookie can be used to assign access to a person without this becoming identifiable. Saved next to accessed pages and files are information on the operating system in use, browser, browser plugins (eg whether the Flashplayer is active or not), screen resolution, the approximate location (eg “Berlin”, but no concrete address) and the length of stay. If you do not agree with the save and analysis of the collected data by Matomo from your visit, you can contradict to the storage and use at any time by a simple mouse click. In this case, a so-called opt-out cookie is stored in your browser, with the result that Matomo does not collect any data of the session. Please note that the complete deletion of your cookies will result in the opt-out cookie being deleted as well and possibly has to be re-activated by you.
Purposeful data usage
We only collect, process and store your personal data exclusively for TUB purposes and only for the purpose for which you have transfered them to us and thus observe the principle of earmarked data usage. There will be no disclosure of your personal data to third parties without your explicit approval, unless this is necessary for the provision of the service or for the performance of the contract. The transmission to information-requesting state institution and authorities takes place only in the context of the legal information obligations or if we are obliged by a court decision to provide information. We also take the internal university data protection very serious. Our employees as well as the service companies commissioned by us are obliged to maintain secrecy and to comply with data protection regulations.
Right of Access
You will receive information about your stored data free of charge at any time without giving reasons. Therefore please contact the contact address given in the imprint. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further questions regarding our privacy policy. Please note that data protection regulations and data protection practices (eg on Google) may change constantly, so that it is necessary to keep up to date with changes in the legal provisions and practice of companies. This privacy policy applies only to the content of TUB web servers that make this privacy statement available, and does not include the linked websites of downstream or external web servers.
