The thesis is based on the research project “STRATEGIES FOR THE BUILD“ by Guestprofessor Matthias Ballestrem of TU Berlin, which deals with the strategies for the preservation and redevelopment of old city quarters and buildings in China using the example of Zhifu Island. The results basically stayed on an urban level. Furthermore initial position and aim of the “DONGKOU HUTONG“ project is about the given problems on a more detailed and architectural level. It is answering the question of how to transform an old into a new architure, the chinese courtyard house, while preserving cultural based habits of living and the redevelopment of the actual housing situation.
Under the circumstances of the rising population it is dealing with the density of housing and how to use space more intelligent.
